1. Meet the Parents

This 2000 comedy movie centers on a boyfriend’s ultimate fear: meeting his girlfriend’s parents for the first time. In the case of Ben Stiller’s character, his girlfriend’s parents include a father, played by Robert De Niro, who also happens to be an ex-CIA agent. Hilarity ensues a Stiller’s character tries his best to impress De Niro but with decidedly mixed results. This movie has a few iconic moments and lines that most people remember years after they see it. It was also so popular that it spawned two sequels, but neither were as good as the original. It’s clearly one of the funniest movies on Hulu.

2. The Birdcage

The 1996 American remake of the classic French film La Cage aux Folles is also one of the best movies that features the late, great Robin Williams. Nathan Lane and Williams play a gay couple, but Williams also has a son from a one night stand with a woman. That son now wants to marry a woman whose parents are highly conservative. Similar to Meet The Parents in some ways, The Birdcage is ultimately a movie that is not only funny but also tries to show that people have more similarities to each other than differences.

3. Sorry to Bother You

This 2018 dark comedy comes from rapper Boots Riley, in his excellent debut as a film writer and director. Lakeith Stanfield plays a black man who pays the bills as a telemarketer, who discovered he can be more successful by using his “white voice”. Riley uses his film at first to makes some points about race relations, but later he and the movie goes off in a whole other direction that we won’t reveal here. It’s funny, it’s thought-provoking and thankfully, it’s also entertaining as well. It’s a no-brainer as one of the best movies on Hulu.

4. Superbad

This 2010 teen comedy movie was written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and is based in part on their own experiences in high school. Jonah Hill and Michael Cera as Seth and Evan, who are about to graduate, but want to do some things before their time in high school is over. There there are some truly hilarious sequences in the movie and it also features a star-making turn from Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogell, who famously creates a fake ivy with his new name McLovin. This is also the movie that introduced us to Emma Stone.

5. Bull Durham

If you like comedies with a more mature and adult bent, then Bull Durham is for you. This 1988 film is also one of the best sports movies ever made. Kevin Costner plays “Crash” Davis, a long-time minor league catcher who is brought into the Durham Bulls baseball team to help mentor pitcher “Nuke” LaLoosh, played by Tim Robbins, so he can go to “the show”, or the major leagues. Nuke is also taught some other “things” from the Bulls’ major-league fan Annie Savoy, played perfectly by Susan Sarandon. The triangle between these three characters, all set around a small baseball team, wouldn’t seem like a comedy at first, but it is indeed one of the funniest movies on Hulu.

6. Heathers

If you like your comedies with a very dark edge, then Heathers is definitely one you should stream on Hulu. The 1989 cult favorite stars Winona Ryder as a teenager who joins the “Heathers”, the group of extremely cruel girls who believe they rule their local high school. Ryder’s character gets tired of the Heathers and how they treat everyone else at the school, and wants out of the group. Enter Christian Slater’s character who gets together with Ryder in a plot to take down the Heathers, and that leads into some funny, but also very dark, areas. It’s not for everyone, but this movie became a huge hit not only because it’s hilarious, but also because it has some messages on teens and their quest to be popular.

7. Book Club

This 2018 movie features four great actresses: Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen. Their characters form a book club, but when they pick and start reading their newest novel, the erotic Fifty Shades of Grey, each of them tries to broaden their horizons, so to speak. The story doesn’t matter as much as seeing these four great comedic actresses all at once, playing characters that are older but still full of life.

8. Spaceballs

The great Mel Brooks co-wrote and direct this 1987 parody of Star Wars. While it’s not his funniest film, it still has a lot of great comedic moments as Brooks does his best to skewer George Lucas’s original sci-fi film trilogy. Look for some other sci-fi that get the parody treatment in Spaceballs, including a particularly memorable sequence based on Alien. May The Schwartz be with you while you watch this funny movie on Hulu.

9. The Brady Bunch Movie

Most revivals of TV shows in movie form try to either create a straight sequel to the series or reboot the show with an all-new cast. The Brady Bunch Movie, first released in 1995, discovered a new way to bring the classic comedy series to the movies. It hired an all-new cast but treated the Brady characters (and Alice) as if they were lifted straight from the 1970s into the 1990s. The final result shows just how unrealistic the Brady family was, even for its own time, but especially 20 years later. It also happens to be very funny.

10. Idiocracy

idiocracy huluidiocracy hulu

Like his previous film Office Space, writer and director Mike Judge’s second live-action movie, released in 2006, was a major box office flop that has since become a cult hit. Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph play characters who participate in an Army cryogenic experiment, only to find themselves in a world 500 years after they went to sleep. Unlike Buck Rogers, Wilson and Rudolph find that the future is actually a total disaster, with its population completely dumbed down thanks to consumerism and a near lack of true education. The satire is definitely not subtle, but it’s a bit frightening that some of Idiocracy’s future may actually happen sooner than we would like.
